Why Target Holiday Clearance Is So Good

Shopping Target clearance is one of the easiest ways to save serious money. Once you understand how and when Target marks items down, it becomes much easier to score deals at 70% off—and even 90% off! And no, it’s not just leftover junk. You can find really great, useful items.

How Target Holiday Clearance Works

Holiday and seasonal clearance is the only time Target discounts items all the way to 90% off.

• Clearance happens around the major holidays and seasons below:

  • Valentine’s Day

  • Easter

  • Summer

  • Halloween

  • Christmas

• Smaller holidays (like St. Patrick’s Day) usually don’t qualify

• Food is slightly different and is one drop behind non-food items (food goes 30% → 50% → 70% off while non-food goes 50% → 70% → 90% off)

• Beauty items often stop at 70% off

• Like always, clearance may vary on timing and depth of markdowns

How to Spot Holiday Clearance Items

Did you know? Holiday clearance items usually do not have yellow clearance stickers.

What to do instead:

• Don’t rely on shelf signs—those aren’t always updated right away

• Use the price scanner found around the store to check for the accurate discounts (your phone/the Target app will not give you the clearance price - it only gives the online price)

• Don't limit yourself to only checking the seasonal section. Walk the entire store checking regular aisles, and end caps

• Look for any seasonal markings on the packaging: snowflakes or Christmas trees, hearts for Valentine's Day, etc.

Typically, Threshold and Studio McGee Christmas lines are also included! (Hearth & Hand is not). Which brings me to my last tip..

Before a holiday:

• Browse the holiday section on Target.com

• Make mental notes of items you want to check once clearance starts

• Like I mentioned above, the Threshold and Studio McGee holiday lines follow the holiday markdowns and a lot of times these don't look holiday related at all! These are my favorite items to score because I am able to use the items year-round.

While nothing is guaranteed, many of these items usually end up included in the markdowns.
